• Hudson River Rails

The Hudson River has been an avenue for transportation since the area was settled. In the 19th century, steel rails on the bank of the river supplanted boat traffic. The New York Central and; Hudson River RR constructed on the east shore and became the "Water Level Route" to Chicago. Competition arose with the construction of the "West Shore RR". But the West Shore was ultimately absorbed by the Central. In the late 19'80's, the east shore rails carried the passengers on Amtrak and Metro North. On the west side, Conrail hauled heavy freight to New Jersey and beyond. Running time, one hour and 38 minutes, maps and light narration.
